What Drives Your Car Insurance Price in the UAE (and How to Lower It)

What Drives Your Car Insurance Price in the UAE (and How to Lower It)

Two people can drive the same car down the same Sheikh Zayed Road and pay very different amounts to insure it. That is not random. Your car insurance price in the UAE comes from a mix of rules set by the regulator and choices made by each insurer about how risky you and your car look.

Once you know which parts of the price are fixed and which parts move, it gets a lot easier to pay less without ending up with cover that lets you down after an accident. This guide walks through both.

How car insurance prices are set in the UAE

Car insurance in the UAE is not a free-for-all. Since 2017, the regulator has set minimum and maximum premiums for motor policies. That role was held by the Insurance Authority and now sits with the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), which took over insurance supervision in 2020.

The rules work differently for the two main types of cover.

Third-party liability: a regulated price band

Third-party cover pays for damage or injury you cause to other people. It is the legal minimum for any car on UAE roads. Its price sits inside a band based mostly on the type of vehicle and the number of engine cylinders. For private saloon cars, the published schedule looks like this:

Engine

Minimum premium

Maximum premium

4 cylinders

AED 750

AED 1,300

6 cylinders

AED 850

AED 1,400

8 cylinders

AED 950

AED 1,600

More than 8 cylinders

AED 1,300

AED 2,100

Private four-wheel drives have their own band, starting at AED 1,000 for a 4-cylinder model and rising to AED 2,150 at the top end. These figures exclude VAT and optional add-ons. They come from the 2017 schedule as reported at the time, so treat them as a guide and check a live quote for today's numbers.

Comprehensive cover: a floor and a ceiling

Comprehensive cover also pays for damage to your own car. Here the regulator sets a minimum premium of AED 1,300 for saloons and AED 2,000 for four-wheel drives, with a cap reported at 5% of the car's value for saloons. Inside those limits, insurers have room to price you based on their own view of risk. That room is where most of the difference between quotes comes from.

If you want the basics of cover types first, our guide to car insurance in the UAE explains how third-party and comprehensive policies compare.

The factors that move your premium

Insurers don't all weigh these the same way. That is exactly why comparing quotes pays off. But these are the things almost every insurer looks at.

Your car's value, make and model

For comprehensive cover, the price is often worked out as a percentage of the car's insured value. A more expensive car costs more to insure. Models with pricey parts, high theft rates or high repair bills also cost more, even at the same value. A sports car and a family saloon with the same price tag will rarely get the same quote.

Your age and driving experience

Younger drivers and people who recently got their UAE licence usually pay more. Many insurers add a loading for drivers under 25 or for anyone with less than a year of UAE driving history. Some will also ask about the licence you held in your home country, and a long clean record abroad can help, though not every insurer gives credit for it.

Your claims history

A clean record is one of the strongest levers you have. If you have gone a year or more without an at-fault claim, most insurers will offer a lower price. Ask your current insurer for a no-claims certificate before you switch, because the new insurer will usually want to see it.

Claims in your recent past push the price up, sometimes by a lot. They can also limit which insurers will offer you comprehensive cover at all.

Agency repair or garage repair

Agency repair means your car gets fixed at the brand's authorised dealer workshop. It is usually the default for newer cars and it costs more. Non-agency or "garage" repair uses approved independent workshops and is cheaper. Many insurers only offer agency repair for cars up to a certain age, often the first two or three years, though the cut-off varies by insurer.

The excess you agree to pay

The excess (also called the deductible) is the amount you pay yourself on each claim before the insurer pays the rest. A higher excess means a lower premium. It also means more out of your pocket if something happens, so pick a number you could actually pay tomorrow.

Add-ons you choose

Extras push the price up a little at a time. Common ones include:

  • Roadside assistance

  • Rent-a-car or replacement vehicle while yours is repaired

  • Personal accident cover for the driver and passengers

  • Oman cover, if you drive across the border

  • Off-road cover for four-wheel drives

Some of these are worth having. Others duplicate cover you already have through a credit card or a membership. It pays to check before you tick the box.

How to lower your car insurance premium

Here is where the useful part starts. None of these tricks are secret, but most people skip them at renewal because the auto-renewal email makes it so easy to just click "pay".

Compare quotes at every renewal

Your current insurer's renewal price is not the market price. It is one offer. Prices for the same driver and car can vary by hundreds of dirhams between insurers, because each one weighs risk differently. Comparing takes a few minutes. You can compare car insurance quotes on YallaCompare and see the gap for yourself.

Insure the car for what it is worth today

Cars lose value every year. If your policy still lists last year's value, you may be paying for cover you would never receive, since insurers usually pay out based on market value. Check that the insured value matches what the car would sell for now.

Switch to garage repair when the car gets older

Once your car is past its first few years, agency repair often costs more than it is worth. Moving to garage repair can cut the premium noticeably, and approved workshops can do good work. If you still have a warranty that requires dealer servicing, check its terms first.

Raise your excess, carefully

Going from a low excess to a moderate one can bring the price down. Just keep the number realistic for your savings.

Keep your no-claims record intact

For a small scrape you caused, paying out of pocket can sometimes cost less than losing your no-claims discount. Do the maths before you file. If the other driver was at fault, though, claim against their insurer, as that should not count against you.

Drop add-ons you don't use

Look at every extra on last year's policy. If you never drive to Oman, you don't need Oman cover. If your bank card already gives you roadside help, you may not need it twice.

Ask whether third-party is enough

For an older car with a low market value, the gap between what comprehensive cover costs and what it would ever pay out can get small. Third-party cover is cheaper, but it leaves you paying for your own repairs. That trade-off depends on your savings and how much you rely on the car, so there is no single right answer.

Is the cheapest car insurance a good idea?

Sometimes. The cheapest car insurance quote is a fine choice if it covers what you need. The problem is that two policies with the same headline cover can differ a lot in the small print.

Before you buy on price alone, check these points side by side:

  • The excess on each claim

  • Agency or garage repair

  • Whether a replacement car is included

  • Oman and off-road cover, if you need them

  • Whether the insured value matches your car's market value

  • Any limits on young or new drivers

A policy that costs AED 200 less but carries a much higher excess can end up costing more after one claim. Cheap is good. Cheap with gaps you didn't notice is not.

A quick checklist before you renew

Do this a couple of weeks before your policy ends:

  1. Ask your current insurer for a no-claims certificate.

  2. Check your car's current market value.

  3. Decide whether you still need agency repair.

  4. List the add-ons you actually use.

  5. Get at least a few comparison quotes with the same cover and excess.

When you are ready, you can compare car insurance prices in the UAE and pick the policy that fits your car and your budget.
