Family Health Insurance in the UAE: Spouse, Kids & Dependants

Family Health Insurance in the UAE: Spouse, Kids & Dependants

If you live in the UAE with your family, health insurance is not optional for any of them. Everyone on a UAE residence visa needs cover, and when your family is on your visa, making sure they have it is usually your job.

The rules are not the same in every emirate, and the employer's role changes depending on where you work. This guide explains who is responsible for insuring your spouse, children and parents, what family health insurance tends to cost, and how to choose a plan that actually works for a whole household.

Do you have to insure your family in the UAE?

Yes. Health insurance is mandatory for residents across the UAE, and an active policy is normally needed to issue or renew a residence visa. That applies to dependants too. If your spouse or children are on your visa and their cover lapses, their visa renewal can be delayed or blocked.

What changes from emirate to emirate is who pays.

Dubai

Under the Dubai Health Insurance Law, your employer must insure you. It does not have to insure your family. If your employer covers only you, it is up to you as the sponsor to arrange cover for everyone on your visa. That includes your spouse, your children and any parents you sponsor.

Every policy in Dubai must at least meet the Essential Benefits Plan (EBP), the basic package set by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Many employers offer to add family members to the company plan at the sponsor's cost, which is worth asking about before you shop around.

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi works differently. Employers there usually have to insure the employee's family as well, covering one spouse and up to three children under 18. Extra children, or a richer plan than the employer provides, are generally at your own cost. The exact terms sit in your employment contract and company policy, so check them before you assume everyone is covered.

Sharjah and the Northern Emirates

Since 1 January 2025, private sector employees and domestic workers in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah must have at least basic health insurance. The federal basic package costs AED 320 a year for the worker, paid by the employer. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), dependants can join on the same benefits at the same price, but the sponsor pays for them.

Who counts as a dependant?

In practice, a dependant is anyone on your residence visa. For most families that means:

  • Your spouse

  • Your children, including newborns

  • Parents you sponsor

  • Domestic workers you sponsor

Domestic workers have their own rules and are usually insured on a separate plan. Sponsored parents also tend to be priced on their own, because older adults cost more to insure.

Newborn babies

A newborn is often covered under the mother's policy for a short period after birth, commonly around 30 days, though this depends on the insurer and the plan. You need to add the baby to a policy within that window. Leave it late and you risk a gap in cover right when hospital visits are most likely, plus possible problems with the baby's visa.

Sponsored parents

Insuring parents usually costs a lot more than insuring a spouse or child. Premiums climb with age, and pre-existing conditions are common. Some plans add waiting periods before those conditions are covered. If you are bringing parents over, get quotes early so the cost does not surprise you.

How much does family health insurance cost in the UAE?

It depends a lot on the plan and on who is in your family. A few rough reference points:

  • A Dubai EBP basic plan has typically been priced around AED 550 to AED 650 per person per year, as reported in 2025.

  • The federal basic package in the Northern Emirates is AED 320 a year, and dependants can join at the same price.

  • Enhanced plans with wider hospital networks, lower co-pays or international cover cost much more, often several thousand dirhams per person.

  • Parents over 60 usually sit at the top of the range.

These numbers move with insurer pricing and plan changes, so use them as a starting point rather than a quote. The only way to see your real number is to price your own family. Our guide to health insurance in the UAE covers plan tiers in more detail.

One family plan or separate policies?

A family plan puts everyone under one policy, with one renewal date and one insurer to deal with. It is simpler to manage and can cost less than buying separate policies for each person.

Separate policies make sense in some cases. If a parent needs a plan with stronger cover for a chronic condition, it may be better to insure them on their own rather than paying for that level of cover for the whole family. If one partner already has good cover through their own employer, you may only need to insure the children.

There is no rule that one approach is always cheaper. Price both.

What to look for in family medical insurance in the UAE

A plan that works well for a single adult can fall short for a family. When comparing family medical insurance in the UAE, pay close attention to these points:

  • Maternity cover. If you are planning a child, check the maternity benefit and its waiting period. Many plans need you to be insured for a set time, often around a year, before maternity is covered.

  • Paediatric care and vaccinations. Look for cover for routine check-ups and the vaccines your children need.

  • The hospital network. Make sure the clinics and hospitals near your home and your children's school are in network.

  • Co-pays. A family uses outpatient care often. A 20% co-pay on every visit adds up quickly.

  • Dental and optical. These are often excluded on basic plans or offered as add-ons.

  • Pre-existing conditions. Check how each plan handles conditions anyone in the family already has.

How to buy family health insurance

Start with your employer. Ask what your company plan covers and whether you can add family members, and at what cost. Then compare that offer with plans on the open market.

When you compare, use the same family members, the same emirate and similar benefits for each quote, otherwise the prices are not really comparable. You can compare family health insurance plans on YallaCompare and filter by network, co-pay and annual limit.

Before you pay, read the table of benefits and the exclusions. It is easier to spot a gap now than at the hospital desk.

Frequently asked questions

Is family health insurance mandatory in the UAE?

Yes. Every UAE resident needs health insurance, including dependants on your visa. Without active cover, a dependant's residence visa may not be issued or renewed.

Does my employer have to insure my wife and children?

It depends on the emirate. In Abu Dhabi, employers usually have to cover one spouse and up to three children under 18. In Dubai, the employer must insure you but not your family, so cover for dependants is your responsibility as sponsor. In the Northern Emirates, dependants can join the basic scheme at the same price as the worker, paid by the sponsor. Your contract may give you more than the legal minimum, so check it.

How much does family health insurance cost in Dubai?

A basic EBP plan has been reported at around AED 550 to AED 650 per person per year. A family of four on basic plans would pay a few thousand dirhams a year in total. Enhanced plans cost more. Prices change, so compare live quotes for your family.

How soon do I need to insure a newborn in the UAE?

Quickly. Many plans cover a newborn under the mother's policy for around 30 days, but this varies by insurer. Add the baby to a policy within that window to avoid a gap in cover and possible visa issues.

Can I add my parents to my family health insurance?

Often, yes, if they are on your visa. Expect a higher premium for parents, especially over 60, and check how the plan treats pre-existing conditions. In some cases a separate policy for parents works out better than adding them to the family plan.

Is a family plan cheaper than separate policies?

Sometimes, but not always. Family plans are simpler to manage and can be cheaper for a young, healthy family. If one member needs much stronger cover, separate policies may cost less overall. Get quotes both ways before deciding.
