A new city is going to be built in the Taif region; it’s set to boost the Kingdom’s tourism credentials and create more jobs.

In line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, the new Taif City will also include University City, Technology Oasis and residential and industrial areas.

It was announced recently that the Saudi Government has approved plans for a new city to be built with an investment of USD 3 billion, featuring more than 10,000 homes (that’s a capacity of 750,000 residents), a culture heritage tourist centre, technology and industry parks, a university and an airport.

His Highness Prince Khaled bin Salman, Saudi Arabia Ambassador to United States of America, said that all the projects have passed their design phase and now the phase of actual implementation has started.

The new city is set to be built in three stages, with the first phase already signed off. The plan is set to build the residential suburb first which will provide more than 10,000 homes. Covering over 12 million square metres, it’ll be the biggest in Makkah region.

The already popular tourist destination of Souk Okaz city is set to have 1,250 hotels and 130 new homes added to it. The project has participation from the private sector and the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage.

An airport will be built on a 48 million square metre site 40km from Taif and 117km from Makkah. It’s expected to be operational by 2020. The new Taif International Airport is expected to handle five million passengers a year.

This tourism project is estimated to create 4,400 jobs and should attract more than 260,000 visitors a year. With the added interest from tourists, it will contribute nearly USD 80 million a year to Saudi’s GDP.

His Highness King Salman said the aim was to serve Saudi citizens and the homeland.
