We’ve known it has been coming for a while, but Apple has – very quietly – finally brought Apple Pay to the UAE.
There are six UAE banks offering Apple Pay capabilities right now. If you’re a customer of Emirates NBD, Mashreq Bank, HSBC UAE, RAKBANK, Standard Chartered, or Emirates Islamic, you’ll be given access to Apple Pay. You’ll just need a debit or credit card from one of those banks.
Setting up a new card is a cinch. You just need to launch the Wallet app on your iPhone, and tap on the ‘add new card’ button. Enter your card details, verify over SMS, and you’re ready to go. Oh, and you can add cards to your Apple Watch, too.
Once you’re set up on Apple Pay, you can use your iPhone for contactless payments at tons of retailers. You just need to look out for the Apple Pay logo, or else the standard contactless payments logo that you see on newer card machines.
According to Apple, UAE brands like The Address, Carrefour, Du, Dubai Duty Free, Emax, Jumbo, Sharaf DG, Spinneys and Splash all accept Apple Pay right now. And there are a whole bunch more. Even Freedom Pizza put out an announcement today saying that it will accept online Apple Pay payments.
Head to the UAE Apple Pay website to see which other retailers are covered.
