Etisalat customers in the UAE can now use another app, HiU Messenger, to make voice over internet (VoIP) calls.
As with BOTIM and C’Me, which Etisalat already supports, you’ll still have to pay to make VoIP calls through the app – in many countries, such calls are now free using apps like Skype and WhatsApp.
It costs AED 50 a month for unlimited calls if you already have a mobile data subscription and AED 100 using Wi-Fi only if you don’t have mobile data.
The person you’re calling has to have the same app as you installed.
Etisalat, along with du, faces continued calls to unblock free-to-use VoIP apps, particularly WhatsApp and Skype.
Earlier reports that the TRA, the UAE telecomms regulator, may unblock Skype as a part of broad agreement with Microsoft, have so far come to nothing.
If you sign up now for one of the three supported apps, you get two weeks of service for free.
