It turns out there is a way of parking for free in paid parking spaces in Dubai.
There is one big but, however: You have to be a UAE national, specifically a Dubai citizen. And this service only applies within 500 metres of your home.
Still, if you are a UAE National and the area around your house now consists of paid parking spaces, it’s well worth doing.
According to the RTA website, you can apply for the necessary permit at Customer Happiness Centres in Umm Ramool and Al Kifaf Centre.
Take copies of your passport or Emirates ID card, home ownership documents or Ejari contract and vehicle registration card for each vehicle you want to claim a space for.
You can blag up to four spaces depending on how many bedrooms you have in the house. So one bedroom or a studio flat equals one space, two bedrooms equals two spaces and so on up to four.
If the paperwork is in order, you gain a one-year permit for free. Not bad for filling in a few forms!
