Have you ever wondered if those ‘no parking’ signs stuck outside people’s homes in the UAE have any legal authority?
Well, Abu Dhabi authorities have suggested that they don’t.
The emirate’s municipality has just announced an AED 1,000 fine for putting up no parking signs without permission. The fines will have to be paid within 30 days of being issued, after which the case will be referred to court.
“The law prohibits such behaviour, and penalises individuals who distort the appearance of the city or install signboards without the authorisation of the competent authorities,” the Abu Dhabi Municipality wrote in a statement.
The authority also warned against putting threatening notices on cars that are parked close to villas.
“People should stop warning other motorists not to park in front of their homes because it is a public space, and not designated to any particular person.”
Although no parking signs seemingly have no legal authority, it remains to be seen if wary motorists will start parking closer to people’s homes.
