Sharjah, UAE was named World Book Capital for the year 2019 by the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova. A community-focused activity program containing creative proposals to engage the large migrant population along with the innovative, comprehensive, and inclusive nature of the application was the reason for the city’s selection.

The program’s slogan is “Read – you are in Sharjah”. Six themes: inclusiveness, reading, heritage, outreach, publishing, and children are the primary focus of the program. Activities throughout the year will include a conference on freedom of speech, a contest for young poets, workshops for creating Braille books and tactile books, and many other events.

The year of celebrations will start on 23 April 2019, on the World Book and Copyright Day, with the official crowning of Sharjah as the UNESCO World Book Capital for the year 2019, during a first-of-its-kind in the region. The debut night will feature the production of ‘1001 Nights: The Last Chapter’, that is set to take place at Al Majaz Amphitheater from 23rd to 27th April 2019.

537 acrobats, innovators, technologists, and storytellers representing as many as 25 nationalities, and with extensive experience performing in iconic entertainment shows including Cirque du Soliel Canada and Broadway, comprise a unique alliance of international artistes participating in the production.

13 spellbinding performances that blend music, light, and sublime choreography will eventually culminate in one amazing frame that will combine the artistic perfection of gymnastics, acrobatics, and horse riding, among others, immersing the audience in one-of-a-kind-journey.
