It’s been said many times, and it’s true: health is wealth. Your position, your status, your riches don’t matter if you’re unhealthy. We should do all we can to stay well.

- Eat the right type of food

Professionals say that eating right will lower your chances of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease, among many other issues.
- Get enough exercise
Experts agree that exercise is beneficial, and most recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. However, any movement is better than nothing. If you’re sitting for long periods, get up and stretch occasionally. Try and take the stairs, not a lift. And if you can, walk to your destination. Joining a gym is an excellent motivator. Of course, yoga has also been known for ages to improve flexibility, strength and overall well-being.

It’s not the things that happen in life, it’s the way we react to them that matters. Stress has many effects on health, such as raised blood pressure. It’s important not to let it build up, but deal with it in a beneficial manner. Staying active and getting enough rest definitely helps. Relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises and meditation have been known to work wonders.
- Keep your weight in check
This is of course linked to diet and exercise. Sometimes, though, one has to take extra efforts to reach an optimal weight. It’s not so much about how you look in the mirror, it’s about whether carrying those extra pounds is harming your health. The increased possibility of strokes, as well as higher cholesterol levels, have all been linked to obesity. Going on a controlled diet and drawing up an exercise schedule are very important to keep the weight down.
- Get enough sleep
Sleep is often low on the list of our priorities. But getting enough of it is essential for good health. Some studies show that heart disease, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and many other sicknesses can be caused by lack of sleep. Proper sleep also improves mental health and productivity. Most healthy adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best. Children need more, and most older people still need at least 7 hours.
