When the latest generation of the Jeep Cherokee was launched in 2013, it came in for a lot of stick because of the way it looked. We didn’t mind it, to be honest – especially in Trailhawk trim – but apparently going a little too ‘out there’ with your styling will earn you as much negative feedback as positive.

Anyway, the Cherokee has now been facelifted, and it’s a much more palatable package. There’s an all-new front fascia, hood, LED headlamps, and grille. It’s still a Jeep Cherokee, but it’s sort of grown up.

The thing is, the updates are more than skin-deep, as Jeep’s mid-size SUV is soon to sport a new selection of engines, and has had its interior updated, too.

First, the engines. There’s a brand-new 2.0-litre four cylinder that develops 270 bhp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Jeep claims it’s “one of the most technologically advanced engines in the automotive industry”. Right. Basically, it’s full of tech that increases responsiveness and reduces emissions and fuel consumption.

Indeed, this engine is so good that it really outshines the existing (and still available) 3.2-litre Pentastar V6, which delivers 271 bhp and 239 lb-ft of torque. Though, if you want to tow things, this’ll be engine to opt for, as it delivers “best-in-class” towing capacity of over two tonnes.

Otherwise, there’s a smaller 2.4-litre that delivers 180 bhp. No word yet on which engines will be available in the Middle East, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see all three.

Elsewhere, the new Cherokee comes with updated off-road systems, including a low-range gearing option and mechanical locking rear differential. The nine-speed automatic gearbox has also been updated so that it’s smoother on the road, and delivers grunt when you’re off it. Really, in this class, the Cherokee should still retain its crown as the off-road Daddy.

You also get a new UConnect infotainment system, which provides all the standard stuff you’d expect on a new car. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 360-degree cameras – all of that stuff is included. And a proper screen comes as standard on all models – just the more expensive one comes with a bigger touch screen.

So, a worthy update. What do you think, Internet?
