GMC has announced a new pick-up truck. We’re big fans of pick-up trucks anyway, but this one looks like it’s going to be pretty special.

This is the all-new GMC Sierra AT4. Essentially, it’s a souped-up version of the new Sierra, with better specs for both off-roading and refinement. Sounds like quite a recipe for us.

So what do you get over the standard Sierra? Well, let’s start with the off-road gubbins. As standard, this truck comes with a two-inch suspension lift; standard 4WD with a two-speed transfer case, locking rear differential and skid plates; and off-road-tuned Rancho monotube shock absorbers.

There’s more, too: The AT4 comes with 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tyres. You also get hill descent control, a traction select system, and red, vertical recovery hooks. Oh, and a 5.3-litre V8. All as standard.

But, if you’re so inclined, you can go a little crazy with the options list. For instance, you can upgrade that V8 so that it’s a 6.2-litre engine, and you option a whole bunch of tech, a lot of which GMC reckons are firsts on a pick-up truck. You can have a multi-colour head-up display, a rear camera mirror, and full suite of safety features including Surround Vision, Land Change Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking and Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking.

GMC has also made a lot of noise over the optional CarbonPro cargo box, which can be paired with the MultiPro tailgate – the idea being that this is one of the best trucks to actually haul stuff about in.

The CarbonPro box replaces the standard steel inner panels and floor with a lightweight, purpose-designed carbon-fibre composite that offers, according to GMC, best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance.

The MultiPro Tailgate, meanwhile, features six functions and positions, which, GMC says, offers enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation mode and easier access to items in the box. Whatever you’re putting in the box, though, you can take solace in the fact that it’ll swallow 1,784 litres of stuff.

Inside, you get the functional, utilitarian kind of feel that we’ve come to expect from pick-up trucks, but with a little more luxury thrown in. There are splashes of leather on the panels and seats, and a big infotainment system sits at the top of the centre console. There’s also loads of space, so you should be comfortable when you’re not hauling goods about.

There’s no word on price yet, but GMC says the Sierra AT4 will be available from autumn this year.
