Supercars? They’re old-hat. What the billionaires of the world really need are submarines.

That’s according to Aston Martin, anyway. Last week, the British marque took the wraps off of Project Neptune, a two-seater submersible that the company plans to build with Triton Submarines.

The latter company is mostly famous for building high-tech submarines for researchers and deep-sea explorers. But with the Aston Martin tie-up, they’re obviously eyeing a gap in the billionaire playboy market.

And we’re sure you’ll agree that, on the looks alone, the two companies are on to something. The sleek lines certainly evoke something of the Aston Martin DB11, one of our favourite looking cars right now.

And don’t be fooled into thinking that Project Neptune is just a design study or concept. It may have been penned by Aston Martin Consulting, the design wing of the brand, but both Aston and Triton say that they’re committed to building this thing.

What’s more, this isn’t Aston Martin’s first foray into nautical motoring. Last year, the company announced the AM37 Aston Speedboat – a very pretty Riviera-style cruiser. The brand made good on its promise to build that, so we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see test, um, dives of the Project Neptune hitting the internet sometime next year.
