If you’re not on Twitter, you’ll have missed Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeting like crazy about a new addition to the Tesla Model 3 lineup.

It’s called the Performance Model 3, and according to Musk, it’ll outpace and out-handle the BMW M3. That’s quite a claim.

How has Musk arrived at this conclusion? Well, he says, Tesla has created a dual-motor version that drops the Model 3’s 0-100 km/h time to 3.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 250 km/h. He also says that, because the dual-motor translates to a four-wheel-drive car, it’s more agile than the M3 through the corners.

It will “beat anything in its class on track,” Musk tweeted.

Oh, and the Performance model still offers a range of 500 km between charges. Interested? You’re going to have to fork out USD 78,000 – which is basically what you’ll pay for a well-specced BMW M3. And is quite a big jump on the Model 3’s USD 35,000 starting price.

Still, Musk says that you’ll get every option available except for Autopilot.

Plus, if you really think that’s too much, Musk also announced a ‘standard’ AWD model in his tweetstorm. That comes at a USD 5,000 premium over the rear-drive model, and will do 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

What do you think? Could a Model 3 really stand up to the mighty BMW M3?
