This, as we’re sure you’ve noticed, is a new Lamborghini. It’s also an SUV. And, according to the Italian marque, it’s the world’s “first super SUV”.

The Urus has been a long time coming. A concept surfaced five years ago, and, to be honest, the production car here looks remarkably similar to the original concept. Still, Lambo churning out all manner of special editions for its other two cars, the Huracan and the Aventador, we wondered if the Urus would actually see the light of the day.

Well, it’s here now. Like every other marque, Lamborghini has decided that, to ensure long-term survival it needs an SUV. But, because it’s a Lamborghini, the Urus is no ordinary SUV.

For starters, just look at it. That sharp, pointy nose, those angular panels, the angry face. This is definitely a Lambo. What’s also very Lambo-ish is the power – there’s 641 bhp and 627 lb ft of torque. That means 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h.

And yes, stats fans, those numbers catapult the Urus to the title of the world’s fastest SUV.

Funnily enough, though, the Urus isn’t powered by the naturally aspirated V10 out of the Huracan, or the V12 out of the Aventador. It actually borrows the 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 that’s in service in the Bentley Continental GT and Audi RS6. But that actually makes sense. With these bigger cars, you need low-down power and torque, and V8s are better suited to that than naturally aspirated V10s and V12s are. Plus, we expect Lamborghini has tuned the exhaust so that it still sounds raunchy and Italian.

The engine isn’t the only thing that the Urus borrows from its VW Group siblings. The chassis is based on the group’s MLB platform, which underpins the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.

Naturally, though, Lamborghini has made plenty of changes to give its SUV its own personality. Standard wheels are 21-inch, and you can go up to 23-inchers if you want. And there are tons of driving and chassis aids. The torque split is slightly rear-biased, with 60% going to the rear wheels, and you get active torque vectoring across the whole underbody.

There are also adaptive dampers and a clever, electromechanical anti-roll system. You also get four-wheel steering, all manner of differential magic.

All of this means that, along with being supercar-fast on the roads, the Urus should ride well. And Lamborghini also claims it’ll go off-road. There are the standard driving modes of Road, Sport and Race – plus you get a Snow mode as well as Sand and general Off-Road.

No pricing information has been released for the Middle East yet, but we do know that, in the UK, the Urus will start at around AED 815,000.
